The Spitfire and the Lancaster were the two RAF weapons of victory in the Second World War, but the glamour of the fighter has tended to overshadow the performance of the heavy bomber. Yet without the Lancaster, Britain would never have been able to take the fight to the German homeland. Highlights the scale of the bomber’s achievements, including the famous Dambusters attacks. With its vast bomb bay, ease of handling and surprising speed, the mighty Lancaster transformed the effectiveness of the Bomber Command.

Whilst addressing the political controversy surrounding the bombing offensive against Germany, Leo McKinstry also weaves individual tales into this compelling narrative. Rich characters are brought to life, such as Roy Chadwick the designer, who taught himself engineering at night school and Sir Arthur Harris, the austere head of the Bomber Command. This is a rich saga, a story of triumph over disaster and the history of an iconic plane.

This nearly 600 page book (in the paperback version) is a MUST READ for those interested in WW2; for those who love aviation, especially the military variety; and for all those who possibly still wonder what was THE greatest bomber of WW2? Books of this genre tend to sometimes be overloaded with facts and figures that are, to be honest, boring. This marvelous book on the other hand, IS filled with such facts and figures, but this book presents them in such an appealing, grab-your-attention-format and yes, NEWSY way, you’ll find each fact fascinating.
Too long to go onto too much detail here – read the book~! – but the Lancaster could carry twice the bomb load of the wonderful, all time classic USAAF Flying Fortress or B-17. What also makes this book so eminently readable, is that it includes many accounts of former Lancaster crew members. The book also shows the devastating effects that USAAF and RAF bombing missions had on Germany, with the so called “Bombing around the clock.” The USAAF bombed during the day, the RAF at night.Clearly, vividly and in marvelous prose, yes, PROSE, the author – Leo McKinstry – writes LANCASTER, in such a vibrant, colorful, compelling and riveting way, you'll be captivated by each page, thus making LANCASTER a real page turner. There's also interesting stories about HOW the bomber came into being, and the problems faced with the Lancaster's predecessor, the Manchester. Here is a WW2 caliber book that should be, as it is in my home, in your collection of superb books about the shattering, destructive and yes, disturbing conflict known as WW2.

Lancaster The Second World War Greatest Bomber eBook Leo McKinstry Reviews

Excellent and detailed insight in to the origins and success of an aircraft but much more insight in to the politics and strategy of Bomber Command during WW2
Quite a wonderful history of the Lancaster and of RAF Bomber Command during the Lancaster years.
Rich in technical detail about the plane and a scholarly history of the bombing campaign. This well researched, beautifully written book is much needed, given the continuing, often misinformed, debate surrounding the topic. It is also an important tribute to those brave airman who have gone unappreciated for so long. Can't wait to read his other books.
The story of the Lancaster is also the story of the strategic air war over Europe. A well written and well researched book. Recommended to all world War 2 and aviation buffs.
I found this to be a very good book on the whole. During the first few pages, I rather thought that it was going to be a 'rah-rah' tale of stiff upper-lipped English heroes thrashing the hun but I quickly realized that it was actually a well written history that not only details the story of the Lancaster but also presents a well balanced and sometimes scathing overview of the entire British strategic bombing program. It is an entertain read generally but my one criticism of the book is that it is not terribly well organized. The author tends to skip around a bit to much; touching on a topic only to revisit it many times throughout the narrative. He doesn't become repetitive at all, but the jumping about did rather detract from my overall enjoyment.
Nicely written, informative and interesting history of what the title truly says, if not the greatest bomber of WWII then equal to whatever else is considered first.

Lots of detail for the technology buffs such as myself and overall a very enjoyable read.

Only detraction is the endless criticism of Bomber Harris, the detail of his squabbles with pretty well everybody, his close to insubordination in response to commands from his leaders. The book hovers on the edge of stating that the campaign to destroy the residences and civilian population of Germany as a means to end the war was pretty close to a war crime. It got tiresome after a while.

For the rest, good buy, good book, good read.
This I think is one of the best books written on the famous AVRoe World War II bomber. It's highly detailed in all aspects, not only on the plane's development, and construction with the various political and departmental pushes and pulls behind eventually getting it designed and into production, as well as into usage, but also on the nature of its operations. It covers not only those initial and ongoing production concerns and developments, but goes into detail on the operations the Lancaster was involved in, and gives the reader a marvelous 'you are there' sense of what it was like to participate in those operations as planners, officials, ground, and flight crews. It provides a marvelous sense of 'you are there' that enables one to understand what being involved with the Lancaster was like, and what it was like to fly in one. A beautifully and completely done, highly and interestingly detail work... Plaudits to the author!!
