An amazing murder/mystery crime adventure with exceptionally well developed characters and thrilling storyline(s) that twine together quite masterfully. Loved the the strong female ensemble of this detective team and how their unique personalities & individual strengths, contributed to the investigative measures needed to solve this multifaceted thriller. Team Spirit deals with the struggles of a team of South London detectives as they try to catch a serial rapist and also, catch the killer in what appears to be a racially motivated attack. The dialogue is realistic, as are the characters. The detail of place and police procedure seems spot on. The cases themselves are interesting with lots of minor twists along the way. The writing is clear and moves things along at a nice pace. All good so far.
The book has authenticity and that relates to its only real weakness. Modern police work means teamwork and that means a group of characters who the reader has to get to know, to find interesting and to care about. Rather than using clever pacing and artificial devices to slowly introduce the whole team, the author surrounds us with the whole team of people at a very early stage. They are an interesting group of very believable characters. They reflect real life and carry the drama, but it left me scratching my head and having to flick back a couple of times to reread the book as I realised that they all remained important characters throughout the whole story.
I found that I only got a proper handle on who was who and all their relationships around the same time as the story suddenly hits you in the chest. There is a genuine and personal drive to the characters motivations after that and it is followed by a further couple of rewarding major twists towards the end of the book.
Definitely, a good read and I'm looking forward to the sequel. The great thing about a series of books covering the same group of people is that they get more familiar and the complexities of the interactions more rewarding.
First off, I'd like to say this was a very enjoyable crime thriller. What I like most in a story is the characters, and Team Spirit has many fleshed out good ones. Each character feels alive and has their own agenda. I won't give too much of the story away, but it was a page turner to find out who the real arsonist was.
