The Vital System is the first published book by a poet already setting off sparks among readers across the globe. In these poems, the body is always at stake -- vulnerable -- and the poet dares to try and illuminate what she has called "the protective capability of violence." Burroughs's compression of phrasing, subverted syntax, and ability to release a story through cinematically sequenced images allow her to expose particular tensions that are gendered and racial as well as essentially human.

Well, i do agree w reviewer #1 that Burroughs is a good writer; although, i do not think she is a mature writer like, say, Jorie Graham, with whom Burroughs has some similarities [e.g., play with form, including, intentional word length; emphasis on lyric as well as language; "slanted" meaning if meaning should be considered at all]. As a woman of color and a poet, i am very concerned about the APPARENT meaning and linkage of poems on pgs 20 & 56-57 where Burroughs seems to say that she values sex with black men even though it can be violent & demeaning [see shockingly misogynistic Baraka (Leroi Jones)] epigram on pg 20]...Burroughs, also, seems to generalize to all black men following from Baraka's quote...having expressed these [serious] reservations, i enjoyed reading the poems [i read the book from cover to cover at one sitting], and some of the more experimental forms are quite [and, surprisingly] effective [see, especially, pg 14]. In a sense, the book as a unit is like a letter to the reader concerning 4 themes, in particular...sex, gender, grief, and, death...and I think Burroughs effectively weaves the various meanings of a "vital system" [form, function, substance, language]. I look forward to her next book...as a final comment, i did not find any of her singular poems online, though, i may have missed them,

The Vital System CM Burroughs 9781936797158 Books Reviews

It's difficult to say enough about the complex, fascinating, and enriching poems included in C.M. Burroughs, "The Vital System." Each word is so carefully placed in these minimalist poems, and each title so crisply captures the context of its poem that you experience an entire novel is just a few bare lines. Structurally, Burroughs makes splendid and absolutely original innovations. One poem is composed of a title and a footnote. Most of all, these poems aren't just words on the page, they are experiences the reader undegoes with the author. I read this book very slowly, and shared with the author her grief, illness, elation, and desire. What a terrific accomplishment this book is. I recommend it to everyone who loves words, creativity, and the poetry of life.
